Many of the following organizations welcome volunteers. If you are interested in becoming a literacy volunteer, you may contact the Literacy Network’s Volunteer Program or any of the agencies listed below as accepting volunteers.

Literacy Network of Greater Los Angeles Volunteer for Literacy Program (accepting volunteers)

Supports adult learners in literacy programs offered at community-based organizations, WorkSource Centers, and adult schools through one-on-one or small group volunteer assistance. Seeking volunteers who are at least 18 years old, able to commit to two hours a week for three months, and are able to attend a one-time 3-hour training. Volunteers can select over 20 available sites and can arrange the hours of service.

Access Books (accepting volunteers)

Provides high interest, enjoyable reading materials to inner city school libraries. Volunteers are needed to pick up books from individuals and drop-off sites, to sort and catalog books during the week, and to solicit donations and assist with other fundraising activities. Access Books is also seeking volunteer muralists to help beautify various library walls.

BookEnds (accepting volunteers)

Recycles children's books through student-run book drives and places them in schools and youth organizations in need of books. Seeking volunteers to help the small staff in an administrative capacity. You may also help by sponsoring a book drive, donating books and/or money, or by becoming a partner organization.

L.A. Works Let’s Read (accepting volunteers)

A long-term program by L.A. Works with the goal of providing children with the tools to help them reach their dreams. Work individually and as a group with kids' school-related materials. Volunteers in this program must be at least 18 years of age and commit to the full 8 to 10 week session on consecutive Saturday mornings from 10:00 a.m. to noon.

The Los Angeles Unified School District’s Beyond the Bell Branch offers quality after school programs in elementary and middle schools. The Beyond the Bell Branch before-and-after school programs work in partnership with various community-based organizations throughout Los Angeles to provide academic assistance, enrichment activities, and recreation. The wide variety of programs offered includes financial, health, children’s literacy, and tutoring.

Reach Out and Read

Reach Out And Read Los Angeles
Reach Out and Read trains doctors and nurses to advise parents about the importance of reading aloud and to give books to children at pediatric check-ups from six months to five years of age, with a special focus on children growing up in poverty. ROR is a national, non-profit organization that promotes early literacy by making books a routine part of pediatric care.

Reading By 9

Parent Reading Guides
Reading by 9 is a children’s literacy initiative serving children ages kindergarten through third grade.  Since 1999, over 4.3 million new and gently used children's books have been distributed to public elementary schools in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Ventura counties. Nearly 2 million copies of a bilingual Parent Reading Guide are distributed each year.

Reading is Fundamental of Southern California

Motivational Reading Program (accepting volunteers)
Promotes literacy by motivating children to read and inspiring them to become lifelong readers. Seeking volunteers to assist with literacy events, to unpack and sort books at the Book Warehouse, and to set up the distribution of books to children at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books at UCLA, Feria del Libro: A Family Book Affair, and other events.

Ready, Set, Read!

Ready, Set, Read! encourages parents in socio-economically disadvantaged communities to read to their pre-kindergarten children. The program is a free resource for preschool teachers to encourage home reading. The program donates classroom lending libraries and teaches parents how to share books with their children at home. Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic (accepting volunteers)

A nonprofit organization that serves individuals who cannot read standard print because of a vision, physical, or learning disability, by providing them with educational materials in accessible formats. BookPALS (Performing Artists for Literacy in Schools), our community outreach program, is an all-volunteer program comprised of performing artists who read aloud to students in at-risk elementary schools. 

Storyline Online
Storyline Online is an online streaming video program featuring SAG members reading children’s book aloud.

We the Children
We the Children was created to make reading and writing a first person experience by giving children an opportunity to write and illustrate their family histories over a ten-week period, culminating in an autobiography.

South Coast Literacy Council (accepting volunteers)

An all-volunteer, non-profit organization operating in Orange County. All services are provided free of charge. The principal mission is to assist adults to acquire the English language skills that they need for daily living, to take advantage of employment opportunities and to integrate fully into society. KOREH L.A. (accepting volunteers)

A non-sectarian volunteer literacy program created by the Jewish Federation's Jewish Community Relations Committee. "KOREH" is the Hebrew word for "read." Volunteers spend one hour, once a week, reading with a pre-school or elementary school child.

The Wonder of Reading 3R Program

Renovate, Restock, and Read (accepting volunteers)
To inspire a love of reading in children, the organization implements its 3R program in public elementary schools. This program renovates public school libraries, restocks them with new books, and trains volunteers to work one-on-one with struggling students from 1st through 5th grades. The 3R Program is in over 170 elementary schools.

United Way provides an opportunity for hundreds of individuals to engage in hands-on volunteer projects through its Commitment to Caring program. Motheread/Fatheread
Motheread/Fatheread Los Angeles, a program of United Way’s Success By 6 initiative, is a family reading program based on the idea that when families read together - and talk about what they read - family ties are strengthened, parents become reading role models for their children, and children become better readers and better learners.

Saving for the American Dream is a United Way initiative which helps hard-working families take greater control of their economic future by empowering them with the knowledge and opportunities that help lift them out of poverty.
