Customized Workplace Literacy Training - - - How it Works in 7 Steps

Step 1: Employer Assessment

Communication is established between an interested employer and the Literacy Network, and a initial meeting for the Employer Assessment is scheduled.  The Employer Assessment includes the gathering of data regarding the company, workplace needs of the employer, and identifying the logistics (time, duration, place) of a potential Literacy@Work Training.

Step 2: Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and Proposal Submission

After the initial assessment, the Literacy Network or the selected Literacy@Work Provider will submit a Memorandum of Understanding and an accompaning proposal outlining the scope of work for the training.

Step 3: Informational Meeting/Pre-Training Survey and Assessment

Once the course has been agreed to, the first meeting with the proposed participants includes a sharing of information between the instructor and the employees.  This meeting allows participants to begin to form their learning goals through a self-administered survey facilitated by the instructor.  There are also informal oral and written assessments to help the instructor customize the training to the needs of the participants.  This meeting is conducted with the participation of management personnel and also allows work place materials to be identified, shared, and included in the course.

Step 4: Customized Training

Based on the information gathered in steps 1-3, learning objectives are established and curriculum is adapted to meet these objectives in an interactive, learner-centered training.

Step 5: Mid-Term Evaluation

Open communication between the Literacy@Work Provider (which may be the Literacy Network or a partnering service provider) and the employer exists throughout the training period.  However, at the mid course point there is a formal visit from the Provider to gather information on the course from the participants and support the instructor with the trainings.

Step 6: Final Assessment/Post Training Survey/Employer Satisfaction Survey

The final class offers an opportunity for employees to reflect on what they have learned through a self-administered training survey.  Depending on the theme of the course, participants may create action plans for continued learning and development and/or may share a final project with representatives of the employer.  At the conclusion of the final class, the employer will be asked to complete a satisfaction survey for the training.

Step 7: Certificate Presentation/Submission of Final Report with Recommendations for the Future

Once the data has been collected from the final course and the employer satisfaction survey, a final report is drafted for the employer that includes assessment and progress narratives, program evaluations, and recommendations for the future.

Together with the employer, a time and date is selected for the presentation of a Literacy@Work Certificate of Completion to acknowledge the work of the participants and highlight the employer’s investment in their staff's development and ongoing learning.

The Literacy@Work Quality Standards Handbook has been developed and shared with participants of the Literacy@Work Trainer Certification Program.  The handbook and trainings are based on best practices in the areas of workplace and workforce literacy trainings and provide Literacy@Work Providers the tools and information to conduct successful and meaningful trainings.
