The Volunteer for Literacy program can offer you a uniquely rewarding experience as a volunteer tutor for youth and adult learners. We have partner sites throughout Greater Los Angeles who need volunteers. Spend 2 hours a week as a tutor and change your life. No experience is necessary. We will train you to make a significant impact on the lives of adults and their families. Of course, your skills in basic reading, writing, math, job readiness, and/or computers will only make you more effective. You can choose to work one-on-one or with a small group. As a volunteer you will receive:
A professional 3-hour training to help you obtain new learning tools and activities to tutor with confidence
The support of a program staff who will provide on-going assistance, resources and encouragement throughout you volunteer experience
Follow up trainings to grow your skills as a tutor, and discussion groups to network and share best practices with other volunteers in the program
Acknowledgement of your time and commitment to the program at our annual volunteer recognition event
Individuals interested in participating as a volunteer tutor in the Volunteer for Literacy program must demonstrate commitment and consistent participation in order to endure the overall success of the program.
A Literacy Network Volunteer Tutor must be:
Able to tutor for 2 hours weekly for a minimum of 6 months
18 years of age
English proficient
Able to provide own transportation to service provider site
Willing to abide by the program policies and code of conduct
