The Volunteer for Literacy Program connects local literacy service providers with qualified volunteer tutors through a coordinated system of management. The goal of this initiative is to strengthen and build capacity of literacy providers in the Greater Los Angeles community by providing volunteer support to programs that help improve basic literacy skills of adults and the workforce literacy skills of job seekers, incumbent workers, and adult learners. A service provider may be a school, library, WorkSource Center, or other community-based organization that offers literacy instruction. We seek literacy service providers all year long. Currently we partner with 28 service provider sites.
The Literacy Network recruits volunteers from the community and corporate sectors, trains them to serve as volunteer tutors, and provides on-going management as they serve at our literacy service provider partner sites. After the initial three-hour training, we conduct background and character references before placing the volunteer. Volunteers receive monthly check-ins by program coordinators and are encouraged to enroll in additional trainings to grow their tutoring skills.
Individuals interested in participating as a volunteer tutor in the Volunteer for Literacy program must demonstrate commitment and consistent participation in order to ensure the overall success of the program.
